Surplus People in the Universities Research Group (SPURG) is a research group dedicated to helping and championing the affairs of people with disabilities in the Universities.

Surplus People in the Universities Research Group (SPURG), University of Nigeria, Nsukka is a research group dedicated to helping and championing the affairs of people with disabilities in the Universities whose interest is often not accorded desired and commensurate attention by the university communities. Membership of the research group cut across departments and includes both academic and non-academic staff. The Research group has Eleven members.  SPURG was founded in 2015 by Dr Ngozi Osadebe and since then has been facilitating Computer Based Examinations for Students with Special Needs.

Since inception, the research group has had two workshops for students with disabilities. the workshops were aimed at equipping incoming students with disabilities with the skills to adapt to University teaching and learning. Currently, to mark the 2018 International Day for Persons with Disabilities, SPURG is planning a workshop that will involve University Administrators in South East Nigeria, Nigerian Universities Commission, Federal and States ministries of Education, Faculty and Students of University of Nigeria on disabilities issues as it affects students with disabilities in Universities in South East Nigeria.

Through advocacy, the Research group has attracted Perkins Braille Typewriters and wheel chairs to the University of Nigeria and has many promises of other materials.
