At a time when huge battles are being fought in India around diversion of forestland and the rights of tribal and forest dwelling communities, a new system for electronic applications for forest clearance has been proposed, Namati’s Kanchi Kohli writes. However the consultants devising the project have a history of working on controversial Environmental Impact Assessments and have identified the main stakeholders in the forest clearance process without mentioning those people whose livelihoods and culture are rooted in the forests in question.
