High-level legal empowerment advocates speak up for justice at the UN

A high-level panel of advocates for including justice in the post-2015 development goals addressed the UN today, December 12, 2013. The event was an official side meeting of the Open Working Group on Sustainable Development Goals. Speakers included supporters of justice and legal empowerment such as Jan Eliasson, Deputy Secretary-General of the UN; investor and philanthropist George Soros, who is a member of Namati’s International Advisory Council;  Justice Clotilde Nougbode, Judge at the Community Court of Justice, ECOWAS and Lloyd Axworthy, former Minister for Foreign Affairs, Canada. The event was co-sponsored by the UN missions of the United Kingdom and Benin. At the meeting George Soros spoke about the need to include four justice targets in the new development framework that will succeed the Millennium Development Goals after they expire in 2015.
