Joan Baxter with Truthout news reports on the alarming rate and scale of investments in Sierra Leone’s farmland today. He describes how low rents and long lease periods endanger small landholders’ tenure security and increase risk of conflict.
“Since 2009, large investors have leased more than 1.2 million hectares [nearly 3 million acres] in Sierra Leone, or close to 23 percent of the country’s arable land” notes Baxter.
