Legal Aspects of Palliative Care

Palliative care patients and their families – especially those from poor communities – often have limited awareness of their human rights and limited access to and little experience of legal services. The book helps hospice staff to develop awareness of legal issues and gather information on legal problems to enable early identification and referral where necessary.

For legal practitioners, the book aims to enhance their understanding of the needs of patients in palliative care, and to encourage them to extend their services to this vulnerable group. It is supplemented by training exercises for practical purposes. The book will be of interest to readers working with patients and clients struggling with two issues concurrently: the challenges of life-threatening illness and with parallel legal problems.
