National Partnership Agreement on Legal Assistance Services

This report is by the Council of Australian Governments.

An agreement to facilitate reform in the legal assistance sector and provide access to justice for disadvantaged Australians through the delivery of legal assistance services.

The National Partnership Agreement on Legal Assistance Services provides Australian Government funding to states and territories to distribute to legal aid commissions and community legal centres.

The agreement supports a national legal assistance sector that is more integrated, efficient and effective. It seeks to improve access to justice for disadvantaged people and maximise the delivery of legal assistance services within available resources.

The agreement replaces the 2010 National Partnership Agreement on Legal Assistance Services, which delivered funding to legal aid commissions only. It also replaces tripartite and direct funding agreements with the majority of community legal centres.

The agreement commenced on 1 July 2015 and will expire on 30 June 2020.
