Funding legal aid services with public generosity

A Canadian crowdfunding platform called JustAccess is pioneering an innovative model to raise money for people who cannot afford legal services. “A lot of folks read about injustices in the news …[JustAccess] allows them to get directly involved in helping shape the outcomes of those cases,” says Sam Saad, a founder of JustAccess. Their current goal is to raise $10,000 through public donations on their website in order to finance three cases in November. With financial support secured, the defendants will be able to choose their legal counsel.
