Gujarat: massive port expansion and weak environmental regulation

Kanchi Kohli examines the flaws in an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) commissioned for a huge expansion in port facilities on the coast of Gujarat in India. In violation of Government policy, the EIA fails to assess the impact of individual elements of the project and the environmental and social effects of the overall port expansion. In addition, a project involving large land-use change and impacting thousands of livelihoods in an inter-tidal area, has no marine impact assessment.
