Justice minister backs mandatory mediation requirement for divorcing couples

England’s new justice minister, Simon Hughes, is supporting a government plan to require that divorcing couples involved in property and custody disputes see a professional mediator before turning to the court. In Hughes’ words, “When people separate we want them to do it in the least damaging way for everyone involved, especially children. That is why we want them to use the excellent mediation services available to agree a way forward, rather than have one forced upon them.”
