Legal aid reform expected this year in Tanzania

The ‘long-awaited’ Legal Aid Provision Bill will be presented in Tanzanian Parliament in August 2013.  If passed, Tanzania will join countries like Zambia, Sierra Leone, Uganda, Kenya and Malawi who offer free legal aid to indigent defendants. Mathias Chikawe, Tanzanian Minister for Constitutional and Legal Affairs, explains, “We want paralegals to help the government in attending and listening to victims of human rights violations with a view to protecting their rights.”
