After five failed rainy seasons and the worst drought in 40 years, communities in Northern Kenya – mainly pastoralists – are negotiating with carbon project developers to save forests, wetlands and rangelands, and their livelihoods.
The drought robbed them of their food security. The rains that arrived earlier this year, breaking the drought, were far too intense, resulting in flooding that further damaged the landscapes they have lived in and managed for generations.
