Regional meeting affirms value of legal empowerment to Asian development

The Vietnam Lawyer Association (VLA) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) recently co-hosted the third annual meeting of the Legal Empowerment Asia Partnership in Hanoi, Vietnam.  The meeting brought together legal empowerment practitioners, civil society delegates, and government representatives from over 17 countries from the Asia-Pacific region.

Bakhodir Burkhanov, acting director of UNDP in Vietnam, stressed that legal empowerment programs are considered to be a viable strategies for development, and “can be used as a shield to protect the poor in doing business.”  Delegates also discussed critical issues such as community land rights and the potential role for non-governmental organizations to create partnerships with social organizations to promote legal empowerment.
